WEBSITE DESIGNER/MANAGER OF NEW MEDIA

Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, a growing educational and cultural center, seeks an experienced candidate to manage its website and new media initiatives.

Located in an award-winning, state-of-the-art new facility in Chicago's South Loop, Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies invites people of all ages and backgrounds to explore the multifaceted Jewish experience. Through innovative public programming, exhibitions, collections, research facilities and degree programs, Spertus inspires learning, serves diverse communities and fosters understanding for Jews and peoples of all faiths, in Chicago, the Midwest, and around the world.
The Institute houses Spertus College, Spertus Museum, the Asher Library, the Spertus Shop, and the Spertus Café. A Children's Center will open this fall. Spertus has approximately 70 employees.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Full-time position with occasional need to provide technical assistance after hours and on weekends. (Willing to consider alternate arrangements including contract, part-time, or flexible schedule for qualified candidates.)
Reports to Director of Institutional Outreach and Design.
Seeking candidates with at least 3 years experience (5+ years preferred) in design, development, implementation, and support of websites and web-based software. Preferred candidates will have built multiple complex sites using strictly CSS for layout. Need familiarity with current web design trends and have demonstrated ability to provide guidance regarding current and future web-based technologies.
Candidates should be self-directed with strong technical, problem solving, design, and communication skills, as well as experience working with a range of clients with various needs and levels of patience and technical expertise.
As Spertus grows both its traditional and internet-based offerings, website and new media functions are anticipated to grow in scope and importance to the organization. As such, this position offers career-growth potential.
Essential skills:
- At least 3 years experience in web (not print) design and graphics
- At least 2 years experience with e-commerce web sites
- Expertise in web standards, semantics, accessibility, usability, browser limitations
- Ability to hand code XHTML, CSS (expert) (Use of WYSIWYG tool is acceptable but not needed)
- PHP (beginner to intermediate level)
- Flash and ActionScript (intermediate to expert level)
- Experience designing subscriber-based emails and understanding their challenges
- Optimization of web graphics (expert)
- High level of proficiency in Photoshop, Fireworks, and/or Illustrator
- Experience integrating front-end web content with back-end code such as PHP or ASP
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
- Experience with Smarty templates
- Familiarity with InDesign
- Familiarity with audio/video editing and output for various media
- Familiarity with content management systems and blogs
- Experience with intranet design and management
- Familiarity with AJAX / DOM Scripting / Unobtrusive Javascript (intermediate level)
- Familiarity with MySQL (beginner level)
- Familiarity with version control
- Comfort working in both Mac and PC environments
- Familiarity with QA processes
- Familiarity with Zimbra
- Experience with X-Cart
- Experience working with social networking sites and web communities
Past experience in nonprofit, educational, or arts organization a plus.
