Spotlight on Spertus Alumni

Spertus Institute alumni are doing inspiring work all over the world.

They are executives, educators, and entrepreneurs; social workers and advocates for social justice; faith leaders, fundraisers, philanthropists, and more — within and beyond the Jewish community. We are proud to share examples of the value they bring to the organizations and communities they serve.

Making Camp Accessible to All

Pictured above are Spertus Certificate in Jewish Leadership graduate Deb Weiner (who was then working at Keshet, a lauded Chicago-based organization that serves individuals with disabilities) and Harrell Wittenstein (Executive Director of the Association of Independent Jewish Camps). Together they piloted a project establishing integrated programs for campers with special needs, for which they received Spertus Institute's Innovation and Collaboration Award, an award for projects that foster a community of practice among area organizations. Funded with a grant from the Pritzker Pucker Family Foundation, their initiative combines consultations, camp visits, staff training, support calls, and camper intake. “When done correctly, inclusion is mutually beneficial for both the special needs camper and the typically developing camper," said Abbie Weisberg, Executive Director of Keshet, herself a proud Spertus aluma (MS in Nonprofit Management, Class of 2006).
