Yemenite manuscripts
Asher Library is home to a collection of over one hundred Yemenite manuscripts, dating from the 17th to the 20th century, most of which were donated by the late Maurice Spertus. Written in Hebrew and Judaeo-Arabic, they include works of the Bible and its commentary; treatises on law and ritual; homiletical and philosophical texts, liturgy; secular poetry, and historical documents illustrating the social life of Yemenite Jewry.
Many of the manuscripts are illustrated in the rugged fashion of Yemenite folk art, dating from the 17th to the 20th century. We hope you will enjoy the text and illustrations that accompany each item in this fascinating collection.
