Dean Bell

Dean Bell

Dean Bell is Dean and Chief Academic Officer at Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies in Chicago. Dr. Bell earned his BA at the University of Chicago and his MA and PhD at the University of California, Berkeley. He has taught at the University of California, Berkeley, DePaul University, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (where he was Visiting Professor in Spring 2004), and the Hebrew Theological College.

Dr. Bell has served as President, Vice-President, and Secretary-Treasurer of the Midwest Jewish Studies Association and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Association for Jewish Studies. He previously served as Associate Editor and member of the Editorial Board of Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies and an Advisory Editor for the Encyclopedia of Antisemitism, Anti-Jewish Prejudice and Persecution (Santa Barbara, 2005). Currently he is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Mo'ed: Researches in Jewish Studies.

Dr. Bell is author of Jews in the Early Modern World, Jewish Identity in Early Modern Germany: Memory, Power, and Community, Sacred Communities: Jewish and Christian Identities in Fifteenth-Century Germany (Boston, 2001), and with Stephen Burnett co-editor of Jews, Judaism and the Reformation in Sixteenth-Century Germany (Leiden, 2006). Bell is also editor of The Solomon Goldman Lectures, volumes VII (Chicago, 1999) and VIII (2003) and a special edition of Shofar devoted to Historical Memory and the State of Jewish Studies in Germany (Summer, 1997). He is currently a Scholar-in-Residence at the Newberry Library in Chicago, with current research projects focusing on early modern German Jewish memory and early modern cultural responses to natural disaster and severe weather.
