Windows of Light:
Sparks of Illumination in Jewish Lore and Practice

September 9, 2005 through January 2, 2006

new building rendering

This fall Spertus breaks ground on a state-of-the-art new facility, designed by the award-winning firm of Krueck & Sexton Architects. This building's daring glass facade, bathed in light by day and illuminating Grant Park at night, promises to express a bold reinterpretation of Michigan Avenue’s historic street wall. In addition to its architectural accomplishment, it also heralds Spertus' place amongst the great public institutions stretching from Millennium Park to the Museum Campus. The new Spertus will be a gift of architectural and civic significance to the City of Chicago as it presents in its dazzling glass design, the centrality of light to Jewish thought.

This exhibition draws together aspects of the design for the new Spertus facility with precious objects from the Spertus Museum collection to illustrate the significance of light to Jewish lore and practice. Come and explore the way building design can abstract ideas from Jewish tradition while creating a welcoming space for people of all backgrounds.
