Imaginary Coordinates
Imaginary Coordinates is inspired by antique maps of the Holy Land in Spertus' collection. The exhibition juxtaposes these maps with modern and contemporary maps of this region, all of which assert boundaries. It brings these together with objects of material culture and artworks that question national borders, as a way of charting new spaces, fostering conversation, and imagining new communities.
Imaginary Coordinates is Spertus Museum's contribution to Chicago's citywide Festival of Maps. In the year that marks Israel's 60th anniversary, this exhibition offers a space in which to reflect, debate, and engage in civic dialogue. Curated by Spertus Museum Director Rhoda Rosen.

Exhibition-Related Programs
Mark your calendar for programs related to this exhibition, including a May 1 Public Preview Opening Reception, with a lecture by scholar and author Irit Rogoff, and a concert and conversation on May 6 featuring musicians, some of whom are present or former members of Daniel Barenboim's West-Eastern Divan Orchestra.
Exhibition-Related Dialogue
In conjunction with Imaginary Coordinates, international conflict mediator and action researcher Jay Rothman, PhD, will lend his skills and methods to help foster engagement and reflection by viewer-participants about their experiences in this exhibition. Rothman has worked in over a dozen countries — including extensively with Israelis and Palestinians — helping to forge dialogue and understanding between contending ethnic groups. He has developed a web-based reflection system for gathering people's perspectives and feelings about complex issues, and the stories revealed by this engagement. This system is being specially customized as a vehicle for gathering and then feeding back viewer-participants experiences in the exhibition. Watch our website for further information!
Imaginary Coordinates is made possible in part by a generous grant from The Chicago Community Trust.
Spertus Museum is partially supported by a CityArts Program 4 Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, The Mayer & Morris Kaplan Family Foundation, The Orbit Fund, and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
