*It is a custom to observe Havdalah, the end of Shabbat, 72 minutes after sundown.
Melava Malka, literally, "escorting the queen," refers to the Jewish custom of gathering for a celebration on Saturday night as a way to hold on to the Sabbath a bit longer, to bring its spirit into the week.
At Spertus, experience a Melava Malka with a difference when you join us for an all-ages Saturday night party. Ruth Seidner, Music Director at Emanuel Congregation, will lead a song-filled Havdalah, followed by a spectacular performance of Chicago Chamber Musicians' award-winning ensemble-in-residence Quintet Attacca. Enjoy crafts led by musuem educators, and make Sand Art Creations with Gloria Katz, plus food, games, music, and more!
This promises to be an evening of merriment, just like in the good old days at Spertus, but with a new twist.
This new initiative for contemporary Jewish-themed family get-togethers is made possible by the generosity of Larry and Sheila Gerber.
Spertus Museum programming is partially supported by a CityArts Program 4 Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, The Mayer & Morris Kaplan Family Foundation, Harry and Sadie Lasky Foundation, The Francis L. Lederer Foundation, Leo S. Guthman Fund, The Northern Trust Company, and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
