Chicago’s Jewish artists were part of a thriving cultural scene that encompassed Yiddish theater and literature. In fact, in the 1920s Chicago had its very own avant garde Yiddish literary group, similar to those found in New York and Vilna, Lithuania. The group was called “Yung Chicago” and its ties to the artistic scene are apparent in Todros Geller’s portrait of expressionist poet Ben Shalom.
