A Breath of Air, 1930

Samuel Greenburg (1905-1980)

Early Chicago modernists were influenced by their growing metropolis and painted scenes that evoked its unique blend of neighborhood living alongside heavy industry and frenetic commerce. In A Breath of Air, Samuel Greenburg depicts a typical Chicago alley, bursting with people, animals, and garbage, and crisscrossed by lines of hanging laundry and electrical wires.
