Wedding in the Cemetery, 1932

Leon Garland (1896-1641)

Leon Garland came from a traditional Russian Jewish background and memories of his early life in Europe provided inspiration for later works. Wedding in the Cemetery is based on an Eastern European folk legend that if two orphans married in a cemetery during a cholera epidemic, their dead parents would intercede to stop the scourge. This was called a shvartze chasene (black wedding).
