This edifice cannot be anything but the Babylonian Tower with its direct references to the rabbinic Midrash rendered in Ancient Assyrian, “We will build it up to the heaven!” and below, “[To] heaven!” Yet the biblical tale also serves as an allegory for Soviet socialism, with the tower’s Kremlin Wall-like profile, its veneration of ideology, its suppression of freedom, and its inherent scorn toward human life.
