Chapter Two: The Road To Maxwell Street

Arriving Yiddish-speaking immigrants crowded into the Near West Side, southwest of the Loop. A Jewish "ghetto" formed with more than forty synagogues plus myriad Zionist, socialist, and relief societies. Thousands participated in landsmanshaft fareinen, or "homeland societies" and offered opportunities to reminisce about the old country, send aid to their native towns, and dispel the loneliness often felt by new immigrants.
