Near North Side, 1937

Woodcut
Spertus Collection

Depictions of Chicago are found in many of Geller’s prints. Milkweed and Skyscrapers, which Geller made in both lithograph and woodcut versions, portrays smokestacks, rooftops, water towers, a skyscraper seen through a window, and a milkweed in a vase. In a realist style, Geller puts forth an interesting mix of the home and the city, bringing together the rural and urban landscapes. This print (and many others that depict the industry and architecture of contemporary Chicago like South of Chicago, Chicago Towers, and Near North Side, all in Spertus’ collection) were made under the auspices of the WPA/Federal Art Project in 1937 and published in Geller’s major book From Land to Land.
