David Shyovitz
David Shyovitz is Assistant Professor of History at Northwestern University. He studies the intellectual and cultural history of the Jews of medieval and early modern Europe, with particular interests in the history of law, conceptions of and attitudes toward the natural world, the history of "the body," and Jewish-Christian and Jewish-Islamic relations. His dissertation, "'He Has Created a Remembrance of His Wonders': Nature and Embodiment in the Thought of the Hasidei Ashkenaz," examined medieval Jewish understandings of the natural world, and explored the ways in which Jewish and Christian thinkers distinguished "nature" from "the supernatural." His future research projects include a study of medieval Jewish eschatology, and a study of Jewish conceptions of the family. From 2008-2010, he was a fellow at the Center for Jewish Law at the Cardozo School of Law in New York. He has also held fellowships from the Wexner Foundation, the Institute for Christian and Jewish Studies, and the ATID Foundation in Jerusalem.
