SUNDAY, JANUARY 13, 2013

The multi-talented, award-winning, bestselling author
to discuss Judaism, Writing, and Inspiration


(CHICAGO) Award-winning and bestselling author Jonathan Safran Foer will appear at
Spertus Institute on Sunday, January 13 at 2 pm. Mr. Foer comes to Spertus as part of the Institute’s initiative to present dynamic, thought-provoking speakers who address Jewish themes in their work. Mr. Foer will discuss Judaism, Writing, and Inspiration

Jonathan Safran Foeris the winner of numerous awards, including the National Jewish Book Award. He’s been named one of Rolling Stone’s “People of the Year” and Esquire Magazine’s “Best and Brightest." He is currently the Lillian Vernon Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at New York University and is working on a TV pilot for HBO starring Ben Stiller.

Mr. Foer’s debut novel, Everything is Illuminated, was published when he was only 25. It became an international bestseller translated into 35 languages and was named “Book of the Year” by the Los Angeles Times. A movie based on the book starred Elijah Wood as Jonathan Safran Foer.

His second novel, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was published in 2005 and went straight onto national and international bestseller lists. It too was released as a movie, with Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock in starring roles

Also in 2005, Mr. Foer’s libretto, "Seven Attempted Escapes from Silence," was performed by the Berlin State Opera House. In 2009, he published his exploration of how animals are raised for food in a nonfiction book called Eating Animals, which was an instant New York Times bestseller. More recently, Jonathan Safran Foer co-authored the New American Haggadah with Nathan Englander. A new novel, tentatively titled Escape From Children's Hospital, is due out in "early 2014" according to Penguin Books.

The Jonathan Safran Foer program takes place at Spertus Institute, 610 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago. Tickets are $75, $50, and $35. All seats are reserved. Tickets are on sale online at spertus.edu and by phone at 312.322.1773. Discount parking is available for $10 with Spertus validation at the Essex Inn, two blocks south of Spertus. Proceeds support Spertus Institute’s work fostering Jewish learning and leadership.
