Anne Frank: A History For Today
Displayed at Spertus Museum January 29 – May 28, 2006
Anne Frank’s diary, with its poignant account of her years of hiding during Nazi occupation, has touched millions around the world. This exhibition, developed by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and sponsored in North America by the Anne Frank Center USA, showcases the impact of world events on the Frank family, sharing what history can teach about current situations where innocent civilians are targets of persecution. The exhibition juxtaposes Frank family photographs with those of events of the time, interspersed with eyewitness accounts of discrimination, both during WWII and in the present day.
Many of the photographs are reproductions of images taken by Otto Frank, who was a skilled amateur photographer. His subjects were his daughters, Anne and Margot, and his photographs share the touching normalcy of their lives before the war.
Launching the exhibition on January 29, Spertus Institute hosts a rare lecture by award-winning author Pat Conroy (The Great Santini, The Prince of Tides, Beach Music) who will discuss the influence of Anne Frank on his work.
In March, an ancillary exhibition, Smallest Witnesses: The Crisis in Darfur Through Children’s Eyes, depicts this current human rights crisis through drawings by children in refugee camps along Sudan’s border. These drawings, which portray scenes of violence the children witnessed, were given to researchers from Human Rights Watch with the insistence they share them with the world. Like the voice we know from The Diary of a Young Girl, these drawings illustrate tremendous courage in the face of adversity.
