The Maxwell St. Junior Klezmer Orchestra kicked off Spertus’ multi-year celebration of Chicago’s Jewish history. Visitors enjoyed the group’s enthusiastic performance of traditional instrumental and vocal klemzer music as they explored rarely seen objects, heard from the exhibit curator Ilana Segal, and discovered stories from the first chapter of Jewish life in the Windy City.
The Maxwell St. Junior Klezmer Orchestra was founded in 1994. Talented young musicians rehearse twice a month with members of the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band, ensuring a living, thriving future for traditional klezmer music. Maxwell Street Klezmer Band founder Lori Lippitz emceed this performance.
