Spertus Institute is proud to be a sponsor of Chicago Sinfonietta’s Identities, a musical juxtaposition between the Silk Road-connected cultures of Eastern European Jews and the Chinese. Conducted by Music Director Mei Ann Chen, the performance features gypsy/jazz-tinged Klezmer music followed by lush, lyrical sounds of the guzheng, a Chinese folk instrument.
Guest artists include Chicago’s own acclaimed Maxwell Street Klezmer Band and guzheng virtuoso Su Chang.
This performance will feature two Klezmer works by award-winning Russianborn composer Ilya Levinson, who teaches at Columbia College Chicago. Dr. Levinson is music director and co-founder of the New Budapest Orpheum Society, an ensemble-in-residence at The University of Chicago that specializes in music of the Jewish Cabaret.
