The Songs of Solomon
A Performance of Italian Jewish Music of the Baroque
Throughout early modern Italy, musicians composed and performed music for Jewish communal and religious purposes. Chicago Syntagma Musicum performed a concert of Baroque music, including sacred and secular music by Salamone Rossi (1570-ca 1630) and excerpts from the 1733 Hebrew oratorio/ cantata for Hoshana Rabba Elyon, melits u-mastin (God, Mercy and Punishment).
Chicago Syntagma Musicum is an ad hoc ensemble founded in 2005 by bass-baritone Andrew Schultze, an internationally known specialist in the performance of early music, who serves as the ensemble’s artistic director.
