From Victims of Nazism to Survivors of the Holocaust
Jewish Displaced Persons in Germany, 1945-1957
Stranded in Germany after the end of the World War II, 300,000 Holocaust survivors rebuilt their lives while awaiting immigration to new homes outside of Europe. In commemoration of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), Spertus welcomed Dr. Margarete Myers Feinstein to share how these survivors reclaimed control over their lives, asserted their Jewish identity, and confronted Germans over wartime crimes.
Dr. Margarete Myers Feinstein holds a PhD in history from the University of California, Davis. Her book, Holocaust Survivors in Postwar Germany, 1945-1957, tells the remarkable story of a vibrant, yet temporary, community of survivors rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of the Shoah.
