Auschwitz: Arbeit Macht Frei

Why exactly does the Holocaust loom so large in our collective consciousness? To what political purposes has this memory been put? This controversial documentary charts the evolution of our idea of the Holocaust from 1945 to the present. It examines the international campaign for restitution and ponders the relationship between the Holocaust and the contemporary politics of the Middle East.

Featuring interviews with Henry Kissinger, Peter Novick, Norman Finkelstein, Gulie Ne’eman Arad, Elan Steinberg, and Elie Wiesel, this film challenges conventional viewpoints over whether the lessons of the Holocaust have truly been learned.

(Directed by Paul Yule, 50 min.)

Dr. Elliott Lefkovitz, Spertus Professor of Jewish History and Holocaust Studies, leads the post-show discussion of this fascinating film.
