The adjective "Jewish" is often seen as an irrelevance when applied to art or architecture. How can the structure of a building be analyzed in terms of its Jewishness? Can the symbolic or aesthetic appearance of a building be considered Jewish?
This four-session course explores these questions. First, we’ll look at buildings specifically designed to serve the Jewish community. Then we'll explore the works of Jewish American architects, in Chicago and across country. Finally, we will have a roundtable conversation with architects, some Jewish, some not, who have addressed this subject in their practices and research.
Dr. Kevin Harrington is Professor of Architectural History at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is co-author, with Franze Schulze, of Chicago's Famous Buildings, which has just been published in its 5th edition.
