In light of the near-total genocide of Jewish children during the Holocaust, the successful lives of many child survivors, most of whom survived in hiding, are an inspiration. Their adaptation, personal resilience, and accomplishments also remind us of all that was lost with the annihilation of an entire generation.
In observance of Yom HaShoah, Dr. Robert Krell, himself a child hidden during the Holocaust, will discuss surviving children with respect to their struggle to achieve normal lives in spite of their horrendous beginnings. He will also describe the children of Buchenwald, a group of young concentration camp survivors whose progress in life has been fairly well documented by Krell and others. Museum docents will be available following the program to provide guided tours of the exhibition.
Robert Krell, M.D. is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia, and co-author of an updated translated edition of Judith Hemmendinger (Feist)’s book The Children of Buchenwald.
This program is sponsored by the Bernard and Rochelle Zell Center for Holocaust Studies at Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies and the Chicago Board of Rabbis.
Museum docents will be available following the program to provide guided tours of the exhibition.
