Contemporary American Jews have long been comfortable with the idea of an America in which all religious groups are equally removed from the levers of political power. Recent religious resurgence, however, has made this secularism seem more like a passing episode than a foundation of our nation. Is America a secular nation? Or is it Judeo-Christian (or simply Christian)? Or pluralistic and multi-cultural?

In this lecture, Alan Mittleman explores contemporary Jewish appraisals of this question—and the cultural, legal and political implications of the answers.
