Join us to celebrate the launch of a literary landmark of Jewish culture. Since its inception, the Israel Folktale Archives has collected more than 20,000 tales from Jewish immigrants, including long-lost stories from communities that no longer exist in their native lands. In a monumental undertaking, selections are being published in Folktales of the Jews, a five-volume series rich in Jewish content and context.
For this special program, author, editor, and storyteller Dr. Ellen Frankel integrates the fascinating history of the Israel Folktales Archives with story selections from Volume 1, Tales from the Sephadic Dispersion, while renowned tenor Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi joins her to perform music of the Sephardic communities in Turkey, Morocco, Greece, and Israel from which these stories come.
An accomplished storyteller, Dr. Ellen Frankel is the author of many books including The Classic Tales: Four Thousand Years of Jewish Lore and The Encyclopedia of Jewish Symbols. She received her PhD in comparative literature from Princeton University and is CEO and Editor-in-Chief of The Jewish Publication Society of America, the publisher of Folktales of the Jews.
Greek-born Alberto Mizrahi is one of the world’s leading interpreters of Jewish music. He serves as cantor of Chicago’s historic Anshe Emet Synagogue in Chicago and has performed worldwide in recitals, symphony concerts, and operas. Among his new recordings this season is Alberto's World: East Meets West.
