Jewish Mindfulness is enjoying something of a moment, but its roots strike deep into Jewish tradition. In this session, we’ll explore one of its principal modern exponents: Kalonymus Kalman Shapira (also known as the Piaseczno Rebbe). Born into a distinguished rabbinic lineage, Rabbi Shapira strove to create a community of consciousness in the ghetto, teaching his followers principles of mindfulness that would help them survive the daily brutalities of ghetto life with courage and equanimity.
Using excerpts from Rabbi Shapira’s book, Conscious Community: A Guide to Inner Work, we will explore the connection between mindfulness and resilience in Jewish tradition, uncovering how we might apply those lessons to our lives today.
Dr. David N. Gottlieb is Spertus Institute’s Director of Jewish Studies. He received his PhD in the History of Judaism from the University of Chicago Divinity School and writes for a range of academic and general-interest publications. He was the founding executive director of Full Circle Communities, a nonprofit philanthropic developer of affordable housing, and he teaches mindfulness at Orot, the Center for New Jewish Learning.
