Position Overview
Reporting to the Director of Development and Communications, the Assistant Director is a full time 12 month exempt administrative position providing leadership to the development, communications and alumni/ae programs of the School. The Assistant Director is a key member of the Development Office staff and has close working relationships with the Dean of Students, Director of Recruitment and Admissions, and the Senior Consultant for Development and Alumni/ae Relations, supporting the communication needs of all departments.

The Assistant Director has shared responsibility for carrying out the full range of development and communication tasks including coordinating creation of all print, online and other media communications for Meadville Lombard Theological School. As such s/he participates in the development of strategies for external and internal communications, facilitates/coordinates communication efforts by faculty and staff, and serves as a communications resource to faculty and staff. This position requires limited travel, including driving on School business.

Organization Overview
Meadville Lombard Theological School [Unitarian Universalist], located in the South Loop of Chicago, is currently seeking a full-time Assistant Director of Development and Communications who will be a key player in the success of development and communications. A graduate theological institution, Meadville Lombard is academically rigorous, spiritually grounded, unapologetically progressive and deeply committed to teaching and learning for social justice and transformation. Meadville’s innovative education model is a low residency program grounded in service learning and a three year integrated internship. Students travel to Chicago four times a year for learning convocations and intensives in addition to regular contact with faculty and students through a variety of standard technology formats, including social media. The successful candidate must have competency in functioning in a multi-racial, multicultural and theologically diverse learning and work environment.



  • Takes responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of the donor and alumni/ae databases
  • Regular communication with donors and alumni/ae
  • Processes donor gifts and prepares bank deposits
  • Prepares and mails receipts, thank you letters, pledge reminders, and annual donor tax letters
  • Tracks fund agreements insuring on-time annual reports to funders as well as communications from students receiving financial aid to funders as appropriate.
  • Supports Director in Annual Fund appeal mailings
  • Manages Development travel calendar and arrangements
  • Writes Development correspondence, such as thank you letters, fund agreements, and event follow up emails.
  • Finds creative solutions to expand the donor base and engage donors more deeply.


  • Manages all print projects for Meadville Lombard
  • Prepare weekly eNewsletter to students, faculty, staff and board members
  • Assist Director in creating promotional/informational materials
  • Responsible for contracting and managing visual vendors (photography/videography)

Online Communications

  • Manage social media channels, posting and responding accordingly
  • Responsible for website review and training for other staff


  • Works closely with Director to plan and execute events at General Assembly
  • o Includes annual alumni/ae gathering, GA reception, meetings in school suite, and more
  • Supports planning of public relations and development events throughout the year for audiences ranging from 5-200
  • o Includes on- and off-site gatherings for major donors and for cultivation

Budget and Finance

  • Participates in the preparation of monthly fundraising reports for presentation to the president and senior consultant
  • In consultation with the Director, oversees the Development Office budgets and processes expenditure requests for the consultants and director
  • Works with the Vice President, Finance & Administration on the annual audit of the financial records and internal control procedures within Development
  • Completes monthly credit card reconciliation and maintains invoice ledger


  • Ability to communicate effectively about Unitarian Universalism and theological education.
  • A commitment to progressive ideas and values.
  • Minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible experience in a related position, preferably in a higher education environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree a plus.
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office and donor database software
  • Proficiency in public speaking, verbal, and written communication, with strong English and grammar skills.
  • Requires strategic and tactical communications and marketing skills
  • Project and budget management experience in directing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to build consensus using a collaborative style.
