Open Position: Marketing Intern, Winter 2019

Marketing Internship, Winter Semester 2019

Internship position available for Winter semester 2019 in the Marketing & Communications Department at Chicago’s Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership. We are looking for a student studying marketing, advertising, journalism, or communications to assist with initiatives that grow awareness and participation in Jewish educational and cultural programs. The intern will work 2-3 days with a talented team of marketing and design professionals on a variety of projects that support every part of Spertus Institute’s mission.

The position is flexibile in terms of days and hours. Stipend and arrangements for college credit available.

Specific tasks and opportunities:

  • With supervision, the intern will write, edit, and disseminate stories, articles, news releases, blog posts, video posts, and calendar listings to generate awareness of Spertus Institute, its academic and public programs, and the people it serves. This may include interviews of select faculty, presenters, students, staff members, students, or alumni to tease out and tell their stories. It will include creating a plan to circulate resulting content through Spertus communication channels including print, web, social, and new media. 

  • With the Director of Marketing & Communications, assist with production of Spertus News & Events. This print publication reaches an audience of 20,000+ readers.

  • Research and update public listings about Spertus Institute and its offerings. Will include listings in travel publications, newspapers, magazines, and a variety of online content providers.

  • Assist with department-wide initiatives to grow email and social media marketing reach, both organic and paid. Intern will have opportunity to manage institutional Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter accounts. 

  • Contact management.

  • Attend and participate in Spertus Institute events. 

  • Research into related news articles and initiatives from other Jewish organizations and communities, worldwide. Contact and engage with the Greater Chicago community (not just the Jewish community).


  • Excellent writing skills, with proven ability to write creatively, communicate effectively, and proof for perfection
  • Organizational, analytical, and strategic thinking skills
  • Ability to prioritize, plan ahead, and deliver results
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office suite

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Familiarity with the Chicago-area or national Jewish community
  • Design and/or web experience
  • Experience in an academic or cultural environment
  • Experience with Constant Contact, Mail Chimp, or similar email marketing system
