This work is based on a photo from the late 1960s that shows the artist as a young man. The artist’s father, Dave, stands to his right; his mother Sally and sister Eileen are to his left, and little Tina is in front. The artist balances his family group with a field of non-objective painting. The artwork demonstrates Schwartz’s interest in non-figurative styles of painting, and his debt to America’s midcentury masters of Abstract Expressionism. In recent years Schwartz has created a large body of artwork of this type, where people, places and things are replaced with an emphasis on color, scale, brushstroke, and gesture.
