Barry Chazan

Founding Director of the Spertus MAJPS Program and Professor of Jewish Education

Dr. Barry Chazan is the Founding Director of Spertus Institute’s Master of Arts in Jewish Professional Studies Program. He conceived the MAJPS program in response to local community needs and has played a critical role in growing the program to serve Jewish communities in the United States, Canada, and Israel. An internationally acclaimed Jewish educator, Dr. Chazan has held visiting academic appointments at Harvard University, Brandeis University, The Ohio State University, and the Jewish Theological Seminary. A longtime Professor of Education at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he now serves as Professor Emeritus, Dr. Chazan was the Founding International Director of Education of Birthright Israel. He has served in important professional capacities with the Melton Center for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University and the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Philanthropies. He is widely published in the areas of formal and informal education, the Israel experience, and other spheres of Jewish life.
