Dr. Michael Shapiro, Visiting Professor

Dr. Michael Shapiro is a Visiting Professor of English at the Crown Center for the Humanities at Loyola University Chicago and Founding Director of the Program in Jewish Culture and Society at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Widely published in the areas of early English literature and drama, and modern Jewish literature, his most recent publication (co-edited with Edna Nahshon) in Wrestling with Shylock: Jewish Responses to The Merchant of Venice.

Former director of the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Shakespeare Through Performance Summer Institute, Dr. Michael Shapiro has been a visiting professor at Cornell University, Michigan State University, Tamkang University in Taiwan, Reading University in England, New York Institute of Technology, and City College of New York, among others. He serves on Chicago’s Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee, honoring excellence in Chicago theater. He received his PhD at Columbia University and studied at the Shakespeare Institute at the University of Birmingham, England.
