Spertus Institute's MA in Jewish Professional Studies (MAJPS) program is a world-class, career-boosting Jewish educational opportunity. First piloted in Chicago nearly ten years ago, the program advances the professional skills and Jewish knowledge of those working for and with the Jewish community.

MAJPS has proven to be so influential for graduates and their organizations that citywide cohorts are offered around the US and international cohorts are offered in Canada and Israel.

Do you work for a Jewish organization? Want to work in the Jewish community? Have staff members you would like to see grow as Jewish professionals? This program is designed for you.

This unique graduate program meets the needs of working students through its core curriculum, concentration areas, and individualized learning components — including a one-year-long professional mentorship and an applied final project.

Learning Outcomes

Students in the MAJPS program learn to:

  • Understand the key themes in Jewish communal life today
  • Possess a grounding in classical Jewish thinking and texts
  • Understand the best practices in nonprofit management that
    most affect Jewish communal work
  • Develop skills for critical self-reflection and career planning, aided by work with an individual mentor
  • Integrate theory and practice in the professional environment
  • Learn to work constructively with diverse groups of constituents and colleagues

  • Concentration (4 courses in one of 2 tracks, 3 credits each)
  • Individualized Mentoring and Capstone Project (9 credits)

The MAJPS program also offers the opportunity to earn an additional certification as part of your integrated coursework (additional fees apply) in either Jewish Leadership (through a partnership between Spertus and Northwestern University) or Israel Education (through a partnership between Spertus and the iCenter for Israel Education).

Josh Gibbs (MAJPS) was an Engagement Associate at UChicago Hillel when he began the program, working with college students at a pivotal time in their life, just as their adult relationship to Judaism and the Jewish world is taking shape. View a short video in which Josh explains how the program provided him the expertise to take his career to the next level, something he recently accomplished with his new position as a Campaign Executive at the Jewish National Fund.
